An Overview of Calvert Devon

Pathfinders’ UpLift Team are holding a weekend-long event at Calvert Devon (29th – 31st August) – which features fully accessible outdoor activities led by qualified instructors, and on-site accommodation.

What is Available? Activities for All Abilities

In their own words, Calvert Devon say they are “open to all and specialise in accessible activities for all abilities. We make the impossible possible.”

Archery to zipwire, to climbing and abseiling – you’ll be able to try anything you want. They also have accessible bikes of different shapes and sizes to explore the surrounding pine forests. Canoeing on the reservoir with modified seats for safety and comfort, and two canoes attached together to make capsizing impossible.

What are UpLift Staff Most Excited About?

“My favourite has to be the zipwire; exhilarating and terrifying in one go! The activities are always so well adapted so everyone can take part and it’s nice to go somewhere where I don’t need to think about taking any additional equipment as it is already there!” Said Cath from the UpLift Team. “I’m really looking forward to visiting Devon. I’ve taken part in lots of activities in Calvert Lakes and Calvert Kielder but this will be the first time I have stayed at Calvert Devon”.

The site also has other amenities such as a sensory room, bar, and wet room with a hoist and changing table.

Jacqui, who works in the UpLift Team, said

“I’m really looking forward to meeting new people while getting the opportunity to explore different outdoor activities. I’m especially looking forward to abseiling because…why not?”

Many of the Pathfinders staff have attended Calvert sites around the country – Connor having attended Calvert Lakes many years ago.

“It was great not having to worry about access, it’s just a given”, he said, “and being able to take part in these activities with other disabled people is an empowering experience, and an opportunity I’m glad I took”.

“I’m looking forward to meeting everyone; some of Team UpLift have only met through a computer monitor – I can’t wait to meet everyone in person”.
